FAQ
We will update this regularly as we receive more questions.
Q. Which books do I have to bring with me?
A. The three thin ones! Pincipal's Guide to Scholastic Journalism; The Associated Press Guide to News Writing; and The Starting Point: Young Journalists and the Law. On campus, you will have access to the AP Stylebook online.
Q. What is the dress code?
A. Summer in Virginia can be hot and humid, so dress comfortably for classes. Shorts and sandals are fine. Plan to dress a bit more formally for two occasions: the opening dinner on Sunday, July 6 and the field trip to Roanoke news media on Thursday, July 10. Even for those events, though, men do not need to wear coats or ties.
Q. How will I get to and from the airport?
A. We will have vans and drivers meeting all flights - and taking you back to the airport on Friday, July 18. After you land, go to the baggage area and look for Pam Luecke, carrying a W&L sign. She will direct you to the next van.
Q. What if my plane (or train) is late?
A. Confer directly with the airline (or Amtrak) about other arrangements. If you are unsuccessful, you may call Martin Travel's afterhours number: 1-800-665-7785. Please let Melissa Cox know of any significant delay. Her cell phone number is (540) 319-1986.
Q. When and where is the first event?
A. The first event is dinner at 6:15 Sunday, July 6, in the Washington Room of Evans Hall, on campus. When you check into the Hampton Inn, look for Melissa Cox from W&L and Diana Mitsu Klos from ASNE at a table in the lobby. They will give you welcome material and instructions for getting to dinner.
