Sept. 5 - Friday - Class meets with Prof. Somani, (Prof. Cumming at SPJ in Atlanta) on finding and polishing story ideas, budget lines. Community Contact list assignments handed out.

Broadcast 263 students in lab for iNews training.

Sept. 10- Wednesday- News meeting .

Sept. 11- Thursday - Lab: Organizational/orientation meeting for Rockbridge Report (RR) in lab, 1:25, only about 20 minutes.

Sept. 12 -Friday -- Workshop on using cameras. Meet in 302. (Somani).(For Monday, read "Making Sound Observations" chapter, copies in Green Room.)


Sept. 15- Monday -- Reporting tips -- How to find and frame stories, and getting action, quotes/soundbites, emotion (Somani/Cumming). (Reading for Friday: handout on "Interviewing")

Sept. 17 - Wednesday-  Story meeting.

Sept. 19 –  Friday- Interviewing -- secrets of good interviewing for print and broadcast (Somani).  [AP Style assignment due.] Reading for Monday: "Cultivating Sources" (Ch. 5 of News in a New Century, in Green Room. Take one.)

 

Sept. 22- Monday -- Topic: Finding and developing sources

Sept. 24- Wednesday -- Story meeting.

Sept. 26- Friday -- Videotape examples of "Newsmakers."

 

Sept. 29 -- Monday - Topic: Gathering Information (News in a New Century, Ch. 4) [Community Contact List updates due (hard copies with handwritten changes)]

Oct. 1 - Wednesday -- Story meeting

Oct. 3 - Friday- Michael Todd instructs in Avid suite. Planning Election Day coverage.  Read for Monday: Writing News Packages, and Writing Broadcast News (pick up outside Prof. Somani's office)

 

 Oct. 6- Monday- Prof. Somani: Writing for broadcast packages.

[Oct. 7 - Tuesday - Turn in draft of stories for Oct. 16, not for grade (yet); re-write on Oct. 14 will be graded. No copy editing session today.]
