Oscar Wetherhold Riegel, age 94, of Glasgow, died Friday, August 22, 1997 at Stonewall Jackson Hospital. Born December 26, 1902 in Reading, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Lewis E. Riegel and Florence Wetherhold Riegel. Before retiring in 1973, he was a Professor Journalism, Communications and Propaganda at Washington and Lee University. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, That Club, Sigma Delta Chi, Phi Beta Kappa, Cosmos Club, National Press Club, and the Overseas Writers Club.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert E. Riegel.
He is survived by his wife, Jane Cordelia Butterworth Riegel of Glasgow; one daughter, Cordelia Jane Riegel Bingham of Crowthorne, England; four sons: Kurt W. Riegel of Arlington, VA; R. Hunt Riegel of Novi, Michigan; Mark B. Riegel of Charlotte, NC; J. Quentin Riegel of Bowie, MD; fifteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
The body has been cremated. Family and friends will assembler for a remembrance at a later date. The family has requested donations be made to the following organizations: Glasgow First Aid or Washington and Lee University.
