What was a state-of-the-art expressway in the 1960s has become clogged and perilous. The Virginia corridor of Interstate 81 is approaching its capacity, with an average of 20,000 trucks traveling on the road every day.
The economic downturn has left many without
jobs or coverage. Others who had insurance
simply can't afford it anymore. People with
insurance are encountering gaps in coverage
and a system that just doesn't work. And
local resources are grappling with
increased demands.
Rockbridge County’s landfill has been home to the area’s trash for more than three decades. By 2012, after the landfill closes, how and where residents dump trash will change. As the deadline nears, officials are looking at options such as building a transfer station for the area’s annual 50,000 tons of waste.
The Rockbridge area is seeing a troubling trend in teen births. Across the nation, more women are choosing to become mothers, even if they are unmarried. But locally, nonmarital births are attributed largely to unplanned teen pregnancies and a gap in knowledge about available resources.
