Department courses approved for new foundations curriculum

Two courses in the Department of Journalism and Mass Communications have been approved for inclusion in the university's Foundation and Distribution curriculum.

Media Ownership and Control, taught by Knight Professor of Journalism Ethics Ed Wasserman, and Religion, Culture and Global Media, taught by Prof. Dayo Abah, were approved in separate actions by the undergraduate faculty in its February and March meetings.

Wasserman's course is regular offering in Fall Term. Abah's course is being offered for the first time this spring under the university’s new Freshman Seminars program.

Except for a co-listed State and Local Government class in the Politics Department, they are the first two courses in Journalism and Mass Communications the university has ever approved for its foundations curriculum.

The university adopted the Foundation and Distribution curriculum plan early in 2006. It succeeds the General Education curriculum. All Washington and Lee students are required to take approved courses in several areas to ensure they have a broad liberal arts education. They finish most of those requirements before beginning work in their major.
