Rockbridge courthouses
increase security

By Rachel Turner Metal detectors and screening devices will soon be installed in the two downtown Lexington courthouses. Administrators have promised to make these voluntary security improvements hoping to get an extension on the plans to build a new facility.. According to City Manager Jon Ellestad, the new security systems will not be first class. They will, however, be best they can do in light of the existing facilities. The new security measures will be a big change for the courthouses, as they have never used any kind of equipment in the buildings. Previously, the courthouses have just relied on physical security. If the county’s new proposal is accepted, Lexington’s circuit court building, located on the corner of Main and Washington Streets, will see added security within its side entrance. The nearby district, juvenile, and domestic court building will also see changes, with security added to its Main Street entrance. A hearing on the courthouse relocation project will be held on Feb. 11. If the proposal is accepted, the city’s courthouse buildings can expect to see the new security in place within the next six months. The new security will cost the city approximately $85,000. |
