Milk prices squeeze local shoppers

The average cost of a gallon of milk in the United States rose by more than 50 cents last year, according to the Department of Agriculture. This month, whole milk costs an average of $3.81 per gallon nationwide, up from $3.29 last January. Reduced-fat milk has reached $3.74 a gallon, after costing just $3.19 last year. Shoppers in the Rockbridge area are paying up to $4.29 a gallon.
