Local reaction to museum move
Museum of the Confederacy considers relocation

By JESSICA HOPPER

The old County courthouse may be the new location for the Museum of the Confederacy.

The Museum of the Confederacy is currently located in Richmond. The museum is home to the largest collection of U.S, Civil War artifacts.

Museum officials are contemplating a move because of a steady drop in tourism since 1990.

Lexington officials are investigating the pros and cons of the museum, but how do area residents feel about the possible move of the museum to Lexington?

"I think it's the best and highest use of that particular site. I think it would be good for the community, good for downtown, good for the county."

-Karen Penick,
Title Examiner for Rockbridge County Circuit Courts

"Having the museum here would be a historical milestone for Lexington, a tourist attraction. I'd be all for it. It's OK for me. And this is a free country, that's one great thing about America. We all have a right to express our pride and our heritage."

-Maria Quillin, Retired Teacher

"I do have concerns about a Museum of the Confederacy. I think it could be a very polarizing issue."

-Mimi Elrod, City Council

"I think the history of the Confederacy is important to know. But you don't want to romanticize the Confederacy at this stage, which is easy to do. There's lots of romantic stories about soldiers and heroes, but there was a reason for the Civil War."

-Judy Koenig, Rockbridge County Resident
