Cold snap, snow hit region

Rockbridge County schools were closed Wednesday and Thursday after five inches of snow blanketed the area.


Snow started falling Tuesday evening and stopped by 1 a.m. Wednesday morning.  Road-clearing crews, worked through the night and into Wednesday, with the help of more than a dozen private contractors, hired by Rockbridge County. By Wednesday night, all hard surface roads and 90 percent of dirt roads had been plowed.

Police say 17 car accidents were reported in Rockbridge County in the 24 hours following the snowfall, triple the number on an average day. 

Four flights at Roanoke Regional Airport were canceled Wednesday due to the storm because planes could not land Tuesday night. Fewer than 200 passengers were affected by the snow, and all were accommodated on other flights throughout the day on Wednesday.

Washington and Lee University classes began on a two-hour delay Wednesday. By Thursday, regular scheduling had been resumed.

Snow remained on the ground Thursday as temperatures did not rise above freezing.
