Intense Training Precedes Season

By Brett Strohsacker

Lacrosse season is just around the corner, and the men’s team is looking to have another solid year after an ODAC championship last season.  The Generals, however, will have to deal with the loss of a solid group of seniors last year, including All-American goaltender, Ansel Sanders.

Despite the loss of Sanders, the Generals are ranked 8th in the country in preseason polls.  With high expectations for the upcoming season, the Generals must rely on sophomore goalie Chris Lalli, who saw limited action last year, appearing in only four out of 18 games.       Chris Lalli (Courtesy W&L Athletics)

Lalli is working hard in the off-season in order to fill Sanders’ shoes.  Strength and conditioning coach, Chris Schall, is working with Lalli and has developed an exercise that will focus on Lalli’s hand-eye coordination.

In this workout, Schall sets up a machine that intermittently fires balls at Lalli.  Each ball has a number written on it in either red or black ink.  At first Schall will ask Lalli to identify the color of the number each time a ball is fired at him.  As he gets better, Schall will ask him to identify both the color, and the number written on the ball.

Schall suspects that this exercise will greatly improve Lalli’s hand-eye coordination, as he will have to develop the ability to concentrate on the ball when fired at him with great speed.

Schall came up with the idea after he learned that the U.S. National Women’s Softball team does a similar exercise during their practices.  Players who practice this drill say they are able to pick up on the spin of a pitch more easily.

Though Schall is not sure exactly how effective this will be when working with Lalli, he is hopeful that it will at least have a small impact.

Schall is also working with Lalli on his footwork and quickness, two attributes that he believes will greatly benefit Lalli’s net-minding abilities.
