area school budgets, jobs

The Buena Vista school system is applying for almost $900,000 in federal stimulus money.  The move is a response to the latest round of state budget cuts, which left the district facing a $1 million budget shortfall.

Contractor bids for Lylburn Downing Middle School renovations were higher than expected. The Lexington School Board is working with architects to devise a plan to keep the project within budget.


College coaches
fall short in national diversity

A national survey conducted by the Institute for Diversity and Ethics reports Virginia colleges lack diversity among their sports faculty and administrators.

New businesses open at VMI
A new snack bar and Barnes & Noble bookstore opened Wednesday in the renovated Lejeune Hall at Virginia Military Institute.  The new facility includes a Quiznos, Java City coffee, and a Bené Pizza grill.
