Gardeners teach students to use little green thumbs

* The Roots and Shoots program pairs elementary students with older community residents, who teach them the art of gardening.
*Founder Mary Brown started the program in California, then brought it to Lexington. 
*Waddell, Effinger, and Fairfield elementary schools have adopted Roots and Shoots.

The Roots and Shoots school gardens have been growing since 1995.  In this multigenerational gardening program, area residents help elementary school students learn the art and science of gardening.
