Internal investigation underway
after officer shoots at armed man

Lexington police say they are investigating an incident in which an officer fired at an armed man Monday  after the man refused the officer’s command to stop and drop his weapon.

A police receptionist said Thursday that Chief Steve Crowder was not available to comment on the incident. Police refused to release the name of the officer.

Crowder told other local news organizations that police procedures and policies were followed and the officer who fired on the suspect had acted properly. The receptionist said Thursday that an internal investigation is standard procedure.

According to Rockbridge Regional Jail records, Leroy Hobson, 24, of Powhatan is being held without bond on charges of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, assault and battery on a law enforcement officer, using  a firearm while committing a felony, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, carrying a loaded firearm in the city and brandishing a weapon.
