Rockbridge County Schools could face as much as $2 million in budget cuts--which might mean school closings or drastic program reductions.

One solution the school board proposed involves closing Effinger Elementary School and Rockbridge Middle School and combining them with Central Elementary and Maury River Middle School, respectively. The other proposal involves cuts to several programs, including drama and music.

Parents, community members, and school officials came together on March 1 to discuss the options.

Reduced campus water use
could cause citywide rate hikes

New bathroom appliances and fixtures have lowered water usage at Virginia Military Institute and Washington and Lee, but that might result in higher water rates for Lexington residents. The Lexington Finance Committee will meet tonight to discuss solutions for the loss of revenue.

Local meat inspection subsidy might be on the chopping block

Part of Governor McDonnell’s proposed budget will cut a meat inspection subsidy that covers half the cost for meat processors. Local butchers are prepared to raise their prices if the proposal passes.
