CornerStone bank opens
The bank opened on Saturday to much fanfare. Raffles, prizes and free food attracted many residents to the opening.The bank is the first to open in Virginia in 2009 and only the third to open in the U.S. this year.
Lexington applies for money
The Lexington Police Department is applying for a $58,000 state grant that would allow it to install laptops in its vehicles. The technology would allow officers to check the criminal history of people they pull over without having to go through central dispatch.
Local law enforcement slow Lexington, Buena Vista and county departments say they are not in danger of cutting staff or programs, even without federal or state funding.
Local schools plan, hope Buena Vista school budget plans still up in the air Buena Vista teachers and citizens were left disappointed at a budget meeting at Parry McCleur Middle School that they hoped would end a two-month financial battle. The school system is expected to lose more than $1 million next year from state, federal and local sources. Rockbridge County School Board The Rockbridge County School District presented a tentative budget Monday in response to the $1.2 million in state cuts to come next year. The board plans to use $300,000 of the district’s savings and hopes to receive the same amount from the county.
