University and community
stunned by sudden loss By Lanier Brooks and Rob Armstrong Washington and Lee University continues to mourn the sudden death of Michael K. Gorman, director of the Lenfest Center for the Performing Arts. Gorman was found collapsed on the backstage floor at the Lenfest Center by two lighting design students. Officials suspect Gorman suffered a heart attack while hanging lights in the rafters of the Keller Theater, but are still investigating the cause of death. Students say Gorman was feeling dizzy all morning. Gorman was an active member of the Lexington community since joining W&L in 1991. For 14 years, Gorman managed and organized the $10 million facility, always working behind the scenes. “Mike really gave his all to his job and his job was his first love after his family,” said Charlie Boisky, a W&L graduate. Gorman was responsible for managing all stage activities for the upcoming One Act 2005 Festival. Despite the loss, the head of the theater department, Joseph Martinez insists that everything is still on schedule. “We are carrying on, just as Michael would have wanted us to,” he said.
