Jury recommends death for Morva
in slaying of police officer, guard

Abingdon -- A jury has recommended death for a man convicted of capital murder in the slayings of a hospital security guard and a sheriff's deputy.

The Washington County Circuit Court jury deliberated for 3 1/2 hours Thursday to decide the punishment for 26-year-old William Morva in the August 2006 slayings in Montgomery County. The jurors on Tuesday had found him guilty of capital murder.

The escaped inmate was convicted of overpowering a sheriff's deputy at a hospital and using the deputy's pistol to kill security guard Derrick McFarland and sheriff's Corporal Eric Sutphin. Virginia Tech was shut down on the first day of the fall semester in 2006 during the manhunt for Morva.

The eight-day trial was moved from Montgomery County because of difficulty seating a jury.
