University appoints new provost

At Washington and Lee, the search for a new provost ended with the appointment of June R. Aprille.

Aprille comes from the University of Richmond, where she has served as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs since 2001.

Aprille said W&L was one of a few schools where she would have considered taking a new position, but was attracted to the school because of the strong focus on undergraduates and the law school program.

"Quality people are attracted to Washington and Lee," Aprille said.

Professor of Law Robert Danforth served as chair of the provost search committee. He said the committee began with a pool of 100 candidates before selecting three finalists.

"She had absolutely the right combination of qualities and a great sense of the liberal arts mission," Danforth said of Aprille.

Aprille is the third administrator to come to W&L from Richmond in the past year. Kenneth P. Ruscio was named W&L's 26th president in March 2006. Rodney A. Smolla was appointed dean of the Law School last month.

Aprille said she is also excited to serve under President Ruscio.

Prior to her six years at Richmond, Aprille served as a professor and administrator at Tufts University from 1977 to 2001.

She will assume her new post July 1.
