Local officials are brainstorming proposals to replace Rockbridge County’s landfill.  A 1997 order requires that the unlined landfill be shut down. Proposals for a new facility include a full-service plan to recycle materials.



Cigarette tax costs smokers already

Retailers have raised cigarette prices to maintain profit margins after the tax is implemented.

Cigarette prices have jumped up a dollar in some Virginia stores. The price increase comes before a 62-cent cigarette tax comes into effect on April 1st. Local smokers are not happy about the tax and price increases. The money generated from the tax will go toward children's health.

The Nelson Fine Arts Gallery is showcasing Rockbridge County High School students’ work until the end of the month.  The display honors National Youth Art Month.

 

Lexington schools
receive stimulus money

Lexington schools will use federal stimulus money, not their savings, to fill gaps caused by state budget cuts. (MONICA CHINN/ The Rockbridge Report)

Lexington City Schools received about $265,000 in federal stimulus money to help make up for state budget cuts. The money will keep the city schools' savings intact for at least another year, but it won't help teachers whose salaries have been frozen.
