VMI leader becomes citizen journalist
By Kristi Williams

Buena Vista resident Lieutenant Colonel Stewart MacInnis has been Virginia Military Institute's Associate Director of Communications and Marketing since late 2003. Before coming to VMI, he worked in similar position at Virginia Tech.

MacInnis served on active duty with the U.S. Army from 1973 to 1976 and then joined the Virginia National Guard. He has held various leadership roles, some of them including infantry scout platoon leader and commander of a rifle company that deployed for training to the Republic of Korea in 1987.

He also commanded a Mobile Public Affairs Detachment that deployed to the Republic of Panama to provide support throughout Central America. Before his military retirement in 1995, he served as the public affairs officer for the Virginia National Guard's State Area Command.

MacInnis interviewed Chief Warrant Officer John Walsh of Buena Vista. Walsh is in the Marine Corps Reserves and recently returned from service in Iraq. He also works as Senior Manager of a local Target. As a citizen journalist, MacInnis asked Walsh about experiences overseas and found some striking similarities and differences to his own time in the military.
