Residents push back at proposal that would expand Barger quarry

The Rockbridge County Planning Commission has postponed a decision to allow expansion of the Barger Quarry.  Residents of Old Farm Road are up in arms about owner Chuck Barger's plan to expand the quarry. They voiced their concerns at a meeting Sept. 12. If Barger uses all the land he has asked approval for, the quarry could eventually be 100 feet from some residents' homes.

Barger assured residents that buffers would be used to block the view of the quarry, but neighbors are still upset. Mike Dorsey, associate pastor of the nearby Lexington Baptist Church, said he thinks the quarry should be at least 500 feet from homes.

Residents will be heard again at the next Planning Commission meeting Oct. 10.
