Local photographer's work on display at Staniar Gallery

Local musicians graced the Staniar Gallery Friday night, surrounded by Patrick Hinely's black and white images of jazz musicians. Before the concert, Hinely talked to a packed auditorium about his passion for jazz and photographing the people who play it.

The exhibit coincides with the publication of Hinely's "Jazzperezzo 2008 Jazz Calendiary."  It's the product of 33 years of photographing jazz artists in their element. Hinely is also Washington and Lee's university photographer.

Hinely's work has been featured on albums and in jazz magazines internationally. For him, it's all about capturing the moment in which jazz is created.

"It's from the heart," said Hinely. "There's nothing held in reserve."
