Rockbridge says no

to panhandling

By Melissa Caron

The Rockbridge County Board of Supervisors voted 3-1 Monday to prohibit the solicitation of money within 15 feet of a four-lane highway.

Supervisors had received complaints from local residents about individuals from out of the area who were asking for money near the Lexington Crossing Shopping Center.

But the new ordinance also prohibits local organizations from advertising or asking for money within 15 feet of a four-lane highway.

Supervisors said they could find no other way to deal with the issue.

The ordinance will take effect Monday.
