Crash claims lives in Congo

By: Julie von Sternberg

A Ministry of Information official said that at least 30 were killed Thursday when a plane crashed near a residential neighborhood in the Congo. The dead included at least eight people on the ground.

At 10:30 a.m. the Russian-made Antonov-26 hit three trees and the roofs of several houses, resulting in a blaze and smoke that filled the sky. It is still unknown what caused the plane to go down.

The aircraft is owned by Congolese carrier Africa 1, which is one of several airlines prohibited from flying in the European Union. The planes are known for being overcrowded and unsafe.
