A former Virginia Military Institute cadet who faced a jury trial on felony rape and sodomy charges pleaded guilty Tuesday to a lesser charge of sexual battery.
Stephen Lloyd, 22, won’t face sentencing on the misdemeanor conviction for three years. If he stays out of trouble, he most likely won’t serve any jail time, said Commonwealth’s Attorney Bucky Joyce.

W&L Safe ride bus strikes student
Washington and Lee Sophomore Liz Blackwood was struck by a Traveller bus on Furrs Mill Road Friday night. The student returned to her Maryland home after being hospitalized in Roanoke. Traveller continued operating normally Saturday, and anticipates no immediate service changes. FULL STORY

by Center closing
Natural Bridge Juvenile Corrections Center closed its doors Friday after 55 years of serving and rehabilitating Virginia youth. The closing displaced 71 youth and 87 employees. The Governor's office said the closing was just another unfortunate casualty of necessary budget cuts.

Students at Waddell Elementary School have taken recycling to a new level. At McCormick's Mill a birthday celebration has its green elements. The area's intensified "go green" effort matches current U.S. trends in recycling and green energy efforts.
