Voters stifle Yawns in governors race

Local experts and the polls indicate that the race between Virginia Atty. Gen. Bob McDonnell and state Sen. Creigh Deeds (D-Bath County) might be over before Virginians even get to the polls Tuesday.

Polls show McDonnell leading the race by margins ranging from 8 to 13 points.

But Deeds' organizers say he's still in the race. Deeds' camp says that the first-time voters who put Barack Obama ahead in Virginia last November are not polled, but might vote on Tuesday. Those voters were strongly Democratic in 2008, and if that holds true this year, then Deeds might have a shot.

Washington and Lee Politics Professor Mark Rush said using that rationale is a bit like relying on a miracle. He doesn't expect voter turnout to be very high because election fatigue has set in.
