Warner easily sweeps Virginia vote

Democrat Mark Warner decisively won today’s election to become Virginia’s newest United States Senator. The popular former governor came into the election favored by 30 percentage points in some polls. Warner’s win gives Virginia two Democrats in the Senate, and bolsters the Democrats’ attempt to solidify their control over Congress.

Goodlatte keeps hold of House seat

Republican incumbent Bob Goodlatte defeated Democrat challenger Sam Rasoul in the battle for Virginia’s 6th Congressional District today. The victory marks the beginning of Goodlatte’s ninth term in Congress. He has won handily since he was first elected in 1992. Goodlatte’s 15 years of experience and traditionally conservative constituents were too much for Rasoul, the nation’s youngest congressional candidate, to overcome.
