Warner handily defeats Gilmore

Former Gov. Mark Warner became the state’s newest United States Senator on Tuesday, defeating Republican candidate Jim Gilmore. Warner, heavily favored in initial polls, almost double the votes of his competitor to claim retiring Sen. John Warner’s seat.

Goodlatte maintains House seat

Virginia’s 6th District seat in Congress went to Republican incumbent Bob Goodlatte in a relatively easy victory Tuesday. Goodlatte defeated Democratic candidate Sam Rasoul, though Rasoul won slightly more than 55 percent of the Lexington vote.

Fresh faces in City Council

New faces dominated the City Council elections in Lexington on Tuesday. Marilyn Alexander, David Cox and Bob Lera defeated two incumbents in an election that, despite steady rain all day, saw record turnout.
