Students
support Sudanese refugees By
Kate ShellnuttTwo Washington and Lee organizations are finding surprising levels of student support as they raise awareness and money for refugees in Sudan this week. Since Monday, the local chapter of Amnesty International has sold more than 200 t-shirts, bearing Sudan's flag and the message "Save Darfur." "We've raised a lot of money," said Georgia
Gilroy, the organization's secretary. In addition to bringing in $20 per shirt, some Amnesty members have found people to sponsor them to fast for a day. The seven fasters drank only water for 24 hours."I was hungrier last night, before I went to bed," said Rachael Levine, one Amnesty faster. "Now, I’m ok." Earlier this month, Amnesty International and the Student Association for International Learning, or SAIL, teamed up to put on a talent show benefiting victims of the Darfur conflict. The event raised around $1,000, and organizers are planning a second, joint project. Amnesty International and SAIL are working to bring performance artists, Chapmyn Spoken Word, to campus this winter. |
